DPS said the suspect shot themself after crashing into a parked car while being pursued by a trooper.

TEMPLE, Texas — One person is in critical condition after allegedly shooting themselves following a vehicle chase in Temple, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a speeding Volkswagen car along IH-35 around 7:26 a.m. on Oct. 9.

As the trooper asked for identification, the driver of the Volkswagen allegedly "sped away", prompting the trooper to chase after them.

DPS said the driver travelled into a neighborhood in Temple, where they hit a parked vehicle in the driveway of a home.

When the DPS trooper tried to contact the driver, the driver allegedly took out a gun and shot themself. The trooper performed first aid until EMS arrived, said DPS.

The driver was reportedly taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital where they are in critical condition at the time of writing.

DPS said the trooper did not fire their gun at any time during the incident, and no other agencies were involved.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, said DPS. No further information has been given at this time.
