Officer-involved shooting in Temple near Pepper Creek Trail

The incident landed both the officer and the man at the hospital, police said.

TEMPLE, Texas — A 20-year-old man and an officer with the Temple Police Department are recovering from injuries following an officer-involved shooting near Pepper Creek Trail on Tuesday.

Police initially were called to the 400 block of Kasberg Drive around 8:38 a.m. for a welfare check regarding the man slurring his speech. After the officer arrived and initially spoke to the man with EMS, the man ran away toward Pepper Creek Trail, police said.

The officer attempted to detain the man, but the man resisted and a fight ensued, police said. The man began yelling death threats at the officer and was actively choking him, according to a supervisor that was able to access the live feed of the officer's body camera at the time of the incident.

During this fight, the officer said he was being choked and called out "shots fired," police said. He was then able to detain the man and take him into custody.

Both the man and the officer were taken to the hospital. The man is in stable condition after being shot in his upper-left torso, according to police. The officer has non-life-threatening injuries and is also in stable condition.

Temple Police urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the department at 254-298-5500.
