The shooting took place in the 700 block of Harbour Avenue.

KILLEEN, Texas — A man was taken to a local hospital after an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday Jan. 31, according to the Killeen Police Department.

According to police, at about 9:58 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a car with four people inside on Atkinson Avenue. This stop led to the detainment of the driver and the officer requested back up to check for narcotics.

Chief of Police Pete Lopez told 6 News that a K9 unit arrived and the driver took off on foot, making his way down Atkinson, then 14th Street and finally ending up in the 700 block of Harbour Avenue.

Police say it was at this time when the suspect took out a handgun from his waistband, officers took cover and fired one shot into the upper right thigh of the suspect.

Lopez says officers began to administer first aid to the suspect, placing a tourniquet on him. The suspect was taken to Darnell Hospital reportedly in stable condition.
