SAN SABA, Texas — A domestic disturbance that San Saba area first responders responded to late Monday night ended in a man being arrested after crashing an ambulance.
According to the San Saba County Sheriff's Office, around 11:45 p.m. that night, the sheriff's office non-emergency line was notified of a domestic disturbance that was taking place at Cabo RV Park. The individual reportedly was armed with a bat.
Two officers, one from the San Saba County Sheriff's Office and another from the San Saba Police Department, responded to the call and found a man "causing a disturbance on the property." A K9 handler was called in to assist due to a possible threat to those nearby as a precautionary measure, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities say the man, when confronted by the responding officers, ignored their commands and later ran from the RV Park. The situation was ultimately de-escalated, and the man was looked at by EMS due to "apparent health concerns."
After being looked at by EMS, they determined he needed to be taken to a hospital for a more in-depth checkup. While the man was initially cooperative in the ambulance ride to the hospital, he eventually "became combative and attacked EMS personnel," which resulted in the EMS having to leave the ambulance for their own safety. The man started to drive in the ambulance, but later crashed.
Officers stepped in to assist, taking the man into custody and transporting him the rest of the way to the hospital to be checked on. He was booked into jail after being medically cleared on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and remains in custody, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities say there are no further details and the incident is still being investigated. The man's identity was also not revealed.
"This incident serves as a solemn reminder of the risks our first responders face daily in service to our community," the San Saba County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. "We extend our gratitude to the San Saba Police Department, Hamilton EMS, and Texas DPS for their rapid response and invaluable assistance. We are thankful that all first responders were able to return home safely at the end of their shifts."
The sheriff's office also noted in their statement that the incident wouldn't affect normal operations.
"Hamilton EMS has assured the public that this setback will not impact emergency medical response times for the San Saba community A reserve unit has been deployed to replace the ambulance involved in the incident."
