Scam Alert | Scammers allegedly pretending to be McLennan County Sheriff's Deputies in phone scam

The Sheriff's Office said scammers are claiming to be deputies in order to scam residents out of money.

MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — The McLennan County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) is warning residents of a phone scam.

According to the Sheriff's Office, unknown people are calling residents claiming to be McLennan County Sheriff's Deputies. MCSO stated the scammers are providing a phone number not associated with the Sheriff's Office.

MCSO said neither them nor other law enforcement agencies will seek or demand payment for fines or warrants over the phone, and will not ask for gift cards or other "monetary instruments" in order to keep a person from being arrested.

The Sheriff's Office encourages residents to report any suspicious activity to them at 254-757-5095 or to their local law enforcement agency.

The Temple Police Department also recently warned Central Texans of an increase in scams, both online and by phone. Their recommendations on how to avoid scams can be found at this link.
