Lometa Police Chief indicted on two counts of 'Unlawful Interception'

Court documents show Melissa Cantu was indicted for illegally recording conversations between Municipal Court officials and disclosing them to City officials.

LOMETA, Texas — Lometa Police Chief Melissa Cantu has been indicted on two criminal charges, according to court documents from the 27th Judicial District.

According to the court, Cantu was indicted by a Grand Jury on two counts of Unlawful Interception, Use or Disclosure of Wire, Oral or Electronic Communications.

The court documents claim Cantu intentionally intercepted or tried to intercept conversations between Municipal Court Judge Sharon Watson and Lometa Municipal Court Clerk Stephanie Sweet by recording conversations using the security and surveillance system of the Lometa City Offices.

The indictment also said that Cantu then disclosed or attempted to disclose the contents of those conversations to Lometa Mayor Stephen Hicks, and City Councilmembers Bob Butler, Jaelynn Downey, Alex Witherspoon and Ronnie Cartwright, while knowing that the information was obtained in violation of Section 16.02(b) of the Texas Penal Code.

At the time of writing, Cantu is no longer listed on the Lometa Police Department website.

No further information has been released at this time.
