The suspect in a deadly shooting was charged with the murder of a 32-year-old man in Killeen Friday.
Police said Jason Ricardo Baez, 31, shot and killed Lamar Marcell Robertson, 32, after an argument on February 28th.
Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown set his bond at $100,000. He was taken to the Bell County Jail.
Officers first responded to the shooting around noon at the intersection of 18th Street and Culp Avenue in Killeen. When police arrived, they found Robertson wounded and lying in the roadway. First responders performed CPR and transported him to Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition. Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown pronounced Robertson dead at the hospital at 1:21 p.m. and ordered an autopsy be performed in Dallas.
Witnesses gave officers a description of a gray two-door sedan they saw speed away from the scene. Police then located a vehicle matching that description on Rancier Avenue, but the driver did not stop. A short chase ensued. Officers unsuccessfully tried spike strips. But, police said the suspect's car ultimately stopped near the intersection of Rancier Avenue and Shims Boulevard after a police vehicle hit the driver's vehicle.
The driver, identified Friday as Baez, was arrested without incident at 12:20 p.m. and taken to the Killeen City Jail.
Killeen Police Spokesperson Ofelia Miramontez said the victim and shooter may have known each other and had been involved in some sort of altercation prior to the shooting.
As a precautionary measure, one police officer was transported to the hospital from the spot where the pursuit ended. Miramontez did not offer any information about the officer's condition or possible injury.
