Kempner couple survives after at least 40 shots fired into home

The couple said they did everything they could to avoid being shot in what authorities called a 'barrage of gunfire.'

LAMPASAS COUNTY, Texas — A Kempner couple miraculously survived after someone fired 40 shots into their home late Tuesday night, according to the Lampasas County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said Beyonsa Mathes, 23, and her boyfriend Eliyiahu Ross, 25, first reported someone had broken into their home on Private Road 4805 just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. They said their "high priced bulldog/pitbull" and other valuables were missing, according to the sheriff's office.

It was later that night, around 11:15 p.m., when they called 911 to say someone had opened fire on their home.

Deputies arrived to find more than 40 bullet holes in the front door, living room and kitchen area. They said the rounds were from different weapons. Amazingly, Mathes, Ross and their two dogs were not injured.

The suspect left the scene in a dark colored vehicle similar to one a neighbor reported seeing at the time of the burglary that afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.

Lampasas Sheriff's Criminal Investigators said in a news release Thursday morning they had identified the person involved and that they were "confident arrests will be made in the future."
