GATESVILLE, Texas — A Gatesville ISD teacher has been arrested for allegedly having an "inappropriate relationship" with a student, the district announced on Friday, May 3.

According to Gatesville ISD, the district received a notice that a student allegedly received an "inappropriate online communication" from a Gatesville Junior High School teacher.

Gatesville ISD said the teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave while administration and law enforcement investigated the allegations against her. The teacher has reportedly submitted her letter of resignation and is no longer allowed on GISD property, said the district.

An arrest warrant from the Coryell County Sheriff's Office named Christine Cockrell as the teacher that was arrested.

GISD said two warrants for Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student (a second-degree felony) were issued on Thursday, May 2. Cockrell was reportedly arrested the next day.

An investigation into Cockrell's actions revealed that she had sent a 15-year-old student that now lives in Ohio explicit photos between October and November of 2023. In conversations through Instagram, the victim--which at the time was a student at the junior high--and Cockrell discussed meeting up for sex, but what was discussed did not take place, according to an arrest report.

The report also revealed that Cockrell wanted to take a "younger guy under her wing and teach him stuff."

Gatesville ISD said there are currently no allegations of inappropriate physical contact.

"We will continue to fully cooperate with local law enforcement authorities as this situation develops," said GISD in an announcement about the situation.

Anyone with information about inappropriate communication or other similar conduct is asked to contact the GISD Police Department at 254-865-8281 extension 5840.
