WACO, Texas — The trial of Christopher Weiss continued in McLennan County on Wednesday, April 3, with several family members of Valarie Martinez, whom Weiss is accused of murdering along with their daughter in 2017, taking the stand.
Rigoberto Contreras, Martinez's cousin, told the jury that Weiss came to the house where Martinez and her daughter Azariah were staying with her cousins around midnight on November 4, 2017.
Contreras said Martinez and Weiss went into her bedroom, where an argument ensued. Contreras said he heard crying from the other room. He said the argument continued as Weiss and Martinez left, getting into separate cars with Azariah out to a park.
Contreras said it was the last time he saw Martinez alive. He told the jury he called her multiple times the next day until police arrived.
Contreras told the jury that on multiple occasions, Weiss would accuse Martinez of sleeping with his friends. He said in the weeks leading up to Martinez's death, she and Weiss would argue "nearly every time he came over".
Another of Martinez's cousins, Alexander Contreras, said he was the one who spoke with police the day after Martinez was allegedly murdered. He said he called Martinez multiple times that day until he realized her phone was still at their house.
Alexander Contreras said he positively identified Weiss from a picture on his phone to law enforcement, telling them he mostly came on the weekends to see Martinez and her daughter.
Another state witness said he was out on the lake the night the murders are believed to have been committed, and said he believes he saw Martinez's car and another vehicle out at the lake that night.
The trial is in recess until Thursday morning.
