SHREVEPORT, La. — The parents of a 2-year-old boy are in custody as the toddler fights for his life.

An arrest affidavit shows the child has a collapsed lung, four broken ribs, intestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, first- and second-degree burns and black eyes.

Kevin Wiggins, 28, and Jessica D. Fisher, 26, both of Shreveport were arrested Monday by Shreveport police on charges of attempted first-degree murder, news outlets reported. Both are being held in the Shreveport City Jail. It was unknown if either has an attorney who could speak on their behalf.

The investigation began after the child was taken to the hospital by his mother. Authorities suspect that the boy was beaten about 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher's apartment, arrest affidavits show. Fisher alleged that the father caused the child’s injuries while she was at work, investigators said.. She denied battering her son, but admitted seeing the injuries and waiting about 30 hours before seeking medical treatment for him, the affidavit said.

“Accused admitted to leaving child (seemingly) lifeless throughout the night while she went to several parties throughout town,” the affidavit shows.

Wiggins, who also denied injuring the child, also was arrested on an unrelated warrant charging him with one count of possession of marijuana. And he faces 13 traffic-related charges.
