Waco sportswriter, wife found shot inside home, Sheriff's Office says

The McLennan County Sheriff's Office said a suicide note was found at the scene.

MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — A former Waco Tribune-Herald sportswriter and his wife are in critical condition after an alleged double shooting on Aug. 12, the McLennan County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) confirmed to 6 News.

According to the Sheriff's Office, John Werner, 67, and his wife Karen, 65, were found inside their home in Chalk Bluff, having been shot in the head.

MCSO said a suicide note was found at the scene.

MCSO stated they received a call from John Werner from the home around 3 p.m. on Aug. 12. When deputies arrived on the scene, they reportedly found John and Karen Werner "critically wounded".

The two were taken to the hospital where they are listed in critical condition at the time this article was published, according to the Sheriff's Office.

John Werner wrote for the Waco Tribune for 41 years from 1982 to 2023.

No further information has been given at this time.
