Two-year-old dies after T-bone crash in Temple, suspect in custody

Joshua Rios, of Moody, was booked into the county jail on Monday, Oct. 7 on four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and on bonds totaling $2 million.

TEMPLE, Texas — A crash that left four people injured in Temple on Sept. 30 has resulted in a two-year-old passing away from their injuries, according to the Temple Police Department. 

Authorities have also identified a suspect in the "aggravated assault" crash.

That evening, police went to the 7500 block of North Highway 317 for an accident. When officers arrived at the crash site, they found a car had t-boned another. There was also evidence that an assault had occurred which led to the crash.

The four that were injured in the crash were transported to the hospital with one victim, the two-year-old child, in critical condition.

In an update from police the day after the crash was initially reported, police say an assault took place in 9300 block of Highway 317 before the crash. The assault victim was able to escape and was chased by the suspect, identified by Temple PD in an update on Monday, Oct. 7, as Joshua Rios, 25, of Moody, prior to the three-car crash. 

Rios has previously been arrested on two different types of assault charges, both of which occurred on Oct. 27, 2023, and Feb. 28, 2024, respectively. Both were misdemeanor charges.
