WEST, Texas — The Central Texas community is coming together in West on Nov. 17 for a 4-year-old girl battling leukemia.
Remi Wissinger has spent lots of time inside hospital rooms. She was diagnosed in January, just a month before her 4th birthday.
"Our doctor pulled us into an empty room, and she ended up sitting me and my husband down and she was like, 'Here's some tissues,'" Alyssa Wissinger, Remi's mom, said. "We were heartbroken, you always think it's never going to happen to you."
Remi first started showing signs in November.
"We just thought it was like normal sickness," Alyssa Wissinger said. "Took her to a bajillion and one doctors."
In January, Remi wasn't getting any better.
"We would even walk down like the end of our driveway, and she would sit down, and she was like, 'I'm tired,'" Alyssa Wissinger explained.
After visiting with several doctors, one finally looked into Remi's blood work. It was a diagnosis that took the family by shock.
"It was very tough," Alyssa Wissinger said.
Alyssa Wissinger is in PT school and her husband is a Belton firefighter. They have been right by their daughter's side helping with the fight. So have Central Texans.
"It amazes us every time we think about it because we do not like to ask for help," Alyssa Wissinger said. "Somebody else putting on the benefit for us was amazing. Then all the people that came to support already and have donated and even like little gift baskets, you know, I'm like this is so impressive. You don't see it every day. It's just great to see everybody love your kid. We're thankful from the bottom of our hearts."
The benefit is happening Sunday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at KC Hall in West. Kendra Scott will have a booth. There will be silent and live auctions, raffle prizes, a gift card tree, kids games and $15 food plates. They family says they are thankful for all the support.
