WACO, Texas — There were 211 citizens, officers and law enforcement personnel alike that took part in the Waco Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association's (WCPAAA) Memorial Run Saturday morning at Cameron Park.
The annual event, held from 8 a.m. to noon, went along with national police memorial week, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by officers. WCPAAA President Terry Williams emphasized the importance of supporting both current officers and those who have made "the ultimate sacrifice."
"It just builds that relationship between the public and the police department, and I think it's going to be our biggest fundraising event of the year," Williams said.
Highlighting the association's mission to educate the public on policing practices, Williams spoke on the significance of bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community.
"We want to bridge that gap," Williams affirmed, noting that funds raised during such events are utilized to procure training equipment, supplies, and other essentials to support Waco PD officers.
Participants were offered the choice between a 5k and 10k race, with separate race sign-ups available for retired or active law enforcement officers. Finishers of the race were rewarded with a medal, a shirt, and refreshments upon crossing the finish line.
Monice Rohre, who ran the race in honor of her mother, a retired lieutenant of the Collin County Sheriff's Department, expressed her deep-rooted appreciation for law enforcement.
"I was raised by law enforcement," Rohre said. "They keep our streets and communities safe, and they're there for us in emergencies, and I want them to know that we appreciate it."
