WACO, Texas — Between 15 and 20 houses in the Bellmead area received Thanksgiving meals on Nov. 23 from Meals on Wheels Waco.
Devin Patton and other volunteers dropped off turkey, potatoes, dressing, green beans and more to homebound residents in the community.
"It's a blessing man, it feels good to give to these people and give them a break," Patton said. "We do this every Thanksgiving and Christmas."
Patton has been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels Waco for over ten years. Alongside volunteers from around the community, he dropped off meals for the recipients one by one.
Recipients were not able to comment on receiving the meal due to corporate Meals on Wheels policy, but Patton said their excitement was contagious.
"It just feels good to be able to see the smiles on their faces and the appreciation of being able to bring meals to them," Patton said.
Jenaysis Williams, a young volunteer for the group, was thankful for the opportunity to serve the community.
"I like giving back to the community," Williams said.
Patton and others delivered meals to the families and single-family homes throughout the Waco area until the early afternoon, taking over delivery duties from regular volunteers for the holidays.
It's a tradition of giving that Patton says extends beyond Nov. 23.
"It just gives people a break that do this every day," Patton said. "We do this once a year this time of year, because a lot of people don't get the chance (to have a Thanksgiving meal) because they're always out delivering meals, so we just did that today," Patton said.
