'They have a host of angels around them' | Group of young Central Texas men help hurricane victims in North Carolina

Their journey to North Carolina started Saturday morning and they are currently working hard to reach stranded families and provide relief.

CENTRAL, Texas — People all along the East Coast are still trying to recover from Hurricane Helene as they prepare for Milton to hit. A group of young men from Central Texas took the week off and drove to North Carolina to help families in need.

Even though they can barely get in contact with their loved ones, the men are working hard to reach stranded families. 6 News spoke to Terry Watkins, the grandmother of one of the men who went to North Carolina.

"It's just awful," Watkins said. "People are trapped in their homes because there's so many trees that have fallen over the ground and over the, you know, their yards, their driveways, on top of their cars."

More than 200 people have been killed from Hurricane Helene and families are still stranded from its path of destruction.

"I think it's more than we can even imagine," Watkins told 6 News.

A group of young men from Central Texans are ready to help.

"They've been so tired because like last night they worked till 11 and didn't get in and they had to get up and get an early start this morning," Watkins said. "There are so many people to help, and he said the saddest one that they went to was a nursing home. The people were completely out of water and there was very little food, so they stocked them up."

These men started their journey to North Carolina the morning of Oct. 5, and they didn't even think twice about taking off a week of work. According to Watkins, this just shows the level of commitment they have and that they're eager to be there for those who need it most.

"If somebody needs a hand, they're there to offer it," Watkins said. "They got three truckloads of supplies and water and six guys. They have a host of angels around them."
