Texas Comptroller warns public of email scam impersonating Open Records Division

TEXAS, USA — The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is issuing a cautionary alert to citizens regarding a recent rise in fake emails impersonating the agency's Open Records Division.

According to the department, the scam emails falsely claim that recipients have committed a code violation and urge them to click on embedded links.

The fraudulent emails, will have in the subject line "Code Violation Notice ref.:: 3364541.PDF." These emails are designed to deceive recipients into clicking on the provided links. However, the Comptroller's office emphasizes that clicking on these links can result in the installation of destructive malware onto the recipient's computer or electronic device.

Once installed, the malware is capable of stealing sensitive data from the victim's device, posing a significant threat to personal and financial security.

Citizens are encouraged to report these fake emails to Texas Comptroller of Public Account.
