Central Texas cat nonprofit in need of community support to continue mission

Snip and Tip helps stray cats throughout Central Texas with the trap, neuter and return approach. While the need is great, the work comes at a high cost.

KILLEEN, Texas — A Killeen-based nonprofit is asking for the community's support to continue helping stray cats in the Central Texas area.

Snip and Tip focuses on this through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), educating the public and offering sterilization services for those who could use a helping hand (or paw).

In 2024 alone, Snip and Tip says it has cared for over 1,039 cats.

"We've been doing about 2,000 a year," said Cody Courtain, founder of the nonprofit. "And this year, I think we're actually going to hit the 3,000 mark, and that's a huge increase."

While the organization says each cat has left "an indelible mark" on their hearts, they say the work they do is also expensive.

Courtain has reportedly spent over $40,000 this year.

"On average, it's about $50 a cat for us, and that's just spay and neuter alone," Courtain added. "That doesn't cover any of the background, medical, any of the carrying supplies, any of the traps, nothing."

Snip and Tip is also reportedly losing its current facility in May and is now trying to find room for the cats elsewhere.

Courtain has two spaces in mind, but it comes with a hefty price tag.

"We're trying to kind of get two separate spaces, construction projects, completed to house cats, one for the feral cats that are waiting for surgery and then a separate space for moms with neonates to nurse," Courtain said. "We are $23,000 short on that right now. We are trying to fundraise and get that paid for before I take out a loan on my own behalf."

To help with the costs of its mission, Snip and Tip is asking for donations and help from the Central Texas community. The organization said it hopes to be recognized soon, especially with Temple's new Human-Animal Support Coalition "on the horizon", but said they will still have to scale back operations without support.
