Temple dog grooming business forced to rebuild, again, after recent storms

The damage brought flashbacks for Devran Penrod and his wife Cheri Foster-Penrod, who had to dip into their savings just to reopen from the May EF-2 tornado.

TEMPLE, Texas — The owners of a Temple dog grooming business are rebuilding for the second time this year after Tuesday's storms brought damaging rainfall.

Devran Penrod and his wife, Cheri Foster-Penrod, shared photos on social media shortly after, depicting damages to their storefront, I Shih-Tzu Knot.

The couple was at a family dinner Tuesday when they got a call from their friends that their roof was falling apart.

"Ceiling tiles that were just falling .... ceiling tiles and standing water," Devran Penrod described to 6 News. "... [My] heart just dropped."

They returned at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to take care of the damages.

"We were back to shoveling and drying and cleaning and trying to figure out what was... salvageable and what wasn't," he explained.

This damage brought flashbacks for the husband and wife. Their roof was already a work-in-progress after it was damaged from May 22's EF-2 tornado.

"It was kinda like deja vu all over again because it's like we just got everything all cleaned up," he said.

Despite clean-up efforts over the last four months, the couple revealed how they are now in need for donations from the public.

"We've depleted all of our savings opening the doors earlier this year," Foster-Penrod said.

The couple explained how they may not receive any insurance money any time soon because they are "kind of in a gray area" between the property managers and the landlord, Devran Penrod said.

"We were told by the landlord initially that he wasn't insured or that his policy was canceled," he said. "The property management company reached out and said that he was insured, but they were going off the lease agreement saying that what's inside our suite is on us, what's outside of the suites [is] on the landlord."

Though they are back open Thursday, the couple shared they still need help replacing items and tools that were damaged from Tuesday's storms.

"We need help just replacing tables because our tables are damaged," Foster-Penrod said. "Clippers are damaged and our blades are rusted, and we just are asking for donations so we can get up and running and we can safely groom dogs and get taken care of."

If you'd like to donate, you can send them money via Paypal, Venmo or Zelle. You can find their usernames here.
