TEMPLE, Texas — As the first day of summer is Wednesday, June 19, Temple Fire and Rescue is advising residents of ways to stay safe in the heat.

To combat the heatwave, health officials emphasize several key strategies. One is staying hydrated and avoiding sugary drinks.

In addition to hydration, protecting oneself from the sun’s rays remains critical. It is important to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.

Choosing appropriate clothing is also essential. Lightweight, breathable fabrics and hats are recommended to shield against direct sunlight.

Moreover, Temple Fire cautions against long exposure during peak sun hours. Temple Fire and Rescue says to avoid the hottest part of the day, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents and pet owners are reminded to be especially cautious during high temperatures. Temple Fire and Rescue says to, never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles or exposed to extreme heat.
