St. Louis cemetery in Iola receives Texas historical marker

St. Louis Cemetery was established in 1895.

IOLA, Texas — The Texas Historical Commission has given the prestigious honor to St. Louis Cemetery, recognizing its significance to Texas history with an Official Texas Historical Marker.

St. Louis Cemetery was established in 1895.

Connected with the now-defunct St. Louis Baptist Church, St. Louis Cemetery serves as the final resting place for numerous church members, veterans, community figures, and likely former enslaved individuals.

A dedication ceremony marking this milestone is scheduled for 12 noon on June 27, at the Iola Missionary Baptist Church, located at 23471 FM 244.

The event, organized by the Grimes County Historical Commission, invites the public to participate and celebrate this significant achievement.

The Official Texas Historical Marker program helps bring attention to community treasures and the importance of their preservation,” Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC, said.

Texas boasts the nation's largest marker program, averaging approximately 15,000 markers.
