TEMPLE, Texas — Summer officially begins this week! Problem is, the City of Temple was hit with a destructive tornado less than a month ago and that has had a direct impact on a number of city parks being open.
Temple experienced damage at several parks, including damage to fencing at various locations, the large bridge cover at Woodbridge Park, multiple fabric shade covers, shingles at several facilities including swimming pools and the Lions Park Amphitheater, parking lot light poles, flag poles and more.
In addition to that, over 340 trees were damaged or uprooted within the park system.
Park closures are not just happening in Temple however, one Belton parent says she had to find another park to go to as well.
"We're from Belton so we go to Nolan Creek a whole lot, and the park over there" Belton parent Claressa Caswell explained. "There's a lot of downed wood and stuff right now."
Caswell has been bouncing around Temple to find other parks that are open.
"I have a 10-year-old right now so it's a battle between him and his little two-year-old brother," Caswell added. "One is always wanting to be inside, one is always wanting to be outside. I want them both to go outside this summer as much as possible because it's good to get out the house."
Looking ahead to summer programs, only activities scheduled at Lions Park have been affected by the storm, and the City’s Special Events Team is working on setting a new location for the Hot Summer Sounds series on July 5 and July 21, as they were scheduled for Lions Park.
The Athletics and Special Events Teams are also working with rental groups to address any reservations on the athletic fields and amphitheater to relocate these as well.
Temple officials are working hard to resume normal activities and are hoping parks will be back to normal in about 45 days.
