KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen's aviation airport, Skylark Field is set to receive a $1.5 million grant as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program.
This marks Killeen's second success in securing a competitive grant within three years. Last year, Killeen Regional Airport, the city's primary commercial hub, was granted $5 million.
According to Killeen's Executive Director of Aviation, Mike Wilson, "the grant will be combined with the $2.7 million CO bond previously approved by the City Council." These funds will be used to finalize construction projects, including a new terminal building, ramp enhancements, and improvements to vehicle parking facilities.
The sum of nearly $1 billion across 114 airports marks the initiation of grants for fiscal year 2024, falling between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.
The funding comes from the Airport Terminal Act, one component of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which dedicates $1 billion annually for Airport Terminal Program grants. Over the course of five years, the law will provide a total of $25 billion to revamp the nation's airport infrastructure.
The funds from last year are currently being used for a comprehensive LED retrofit of the entire airport campus, installation of solar-integrated covered parking in the car rental area, and enhancements to the short-term parking lot, along with the construction of a covered walkway linking the terminal to the car rental lot.
