'Something told us to go out and help' | Salado baseball team helps tornado victims after canceled game

Young boys from Silverback Performance went door-to-door asking people if they needed help. Team members said it changed their lives.

TEMPLE, Texas — A Salado baseball team is making light out of a devastation.

This comes after tornadoes hit Central Texas on Wednesday night.

"I was scared that people wouldn't have anything left, we wouldn't have anything left," 10-year-old Gage Graham told 6 News. "There was a huge tree outside. I was scared it was gonna fall somewhere. My mind was overwhelmed."

This was the reality for many. An entire community, left in shambles. Now neighbors are seeing some relief thanks to the Silverback Performance baseball team.

"I think it was just something telling us to go out and help," coach Chris Encarnacion said.

Their came was canceled on Saturday because of the damage the tornadoes brought, so parents and young boys used their time to be there for those who needed it most.

"I gave them a basketball or a football because they don't have anymore toys or sports stuff," 10-year-old Cooper Moehle said.

Boys went door-to-door asking people if they needed helping cleaning up and would not take any monetary donations.

Parents had chainsaws and children were carrying and piling the brush to the street.

"When we showed up, you can see them their faces light up immediately," Encarnacion said. "And something that probably would have took them two weeks to take care of that. We did it in about 45 minutes because we had so much help."

It's something the team will take with them for the rest of their lives.

"Helping someone can really change their lives and change you mostly," Graham said.

"There's no cost to you helping somebody," Encarnacion said. "I think if we can teach that message to our children that when you do things selflessly, without expecting a reward, you get so much more in terms of filling your soul with gratitude."

"I'm just proud to be in a community where there are a lot of caring people," 10-year-old Adam Torres said. "I think with all these kinds of people here, we'll definitely be able to recover from this."

The team is having fall 2024 tryouts starting on June 14. Additional dates are June 21, July 13, 16 and 19 or until rosters are full.
