KILLEEN, Texas β The newest K9 member of the Killeen Police Department officially has a name: Thora!
According to the department, Thora is a 2-year-old Dutch Shepherd and will be trained for search and rescue and explosives detection.
The department chose the name through a community contest where residents could submit their suggestions and vote for their favorite names. After narrowing the choices down to three, the public voted to dub the new recruit Thora, which the department says means "goddess of thunder and protector of humanity".
Killeen PD said Thora will soon be back from training and "ready to serve". She will reportedly make her debut at the City of Killeen Christmas Parade on Dec. 14.
"Join us to meet Thora and her handler, and be part of her first steps in Killeen," the department said in a post on social media. "Letβs make her feel right at home!"
