KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its K9s, Merlin.
KPD announced on Tuesday, Sept. 10 that K9 Merlin had died after "experiencing a recent medical issue and receiving treatment".
Merlin joined the Killeen Police Department in March of 2016, said KPD, playing a "key role in explosives and arrests" during his years on the force.
"His service to the citizens of Killeen and the Killeen Police Department has been invaluable," Killeen PD said in a social media post. "We are profoundly grateful for his dedication and service. K9 Merlin will be greatly missed."
Anyone who has had interactions with K9 Merlin is invited to share their photos to Killeen PD through Facebook Messenger so that they can be passed on to his partner.
Merlin will reportedly be laid to rest later this week.
"Our thoughts are with K9 Merlin's handler and family during this difficult time," said KPD.
