KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen will begin a program to try and help keep the Killeen City Cemetery clean this October, the City has announced.
According to the City of Killeen, City employees will begin a new program to remove items four times a year in an effort to "secure, safeguard and preserve the dignity and aesthetics of the memorial grave site."
Items that will be picked up reportedly include florals, flags and décor. Families will have 30 days to collect the items from staff before they are discarded, the City said. Unauthorized items including benches, chairs, ornaments, trinkets, glass, photos, food, drinks, solar lights, borders and objects that are not secured to the headstone base will be removed immediately, according to the City.
Scheduled cleanup dates reportedly include:
- 3rd Week in October each year, beginning Oct. 21, 2024
- 3rd Week in January 2025 and beyond
- 3rd Week in April 2025 and beyond
- 3rd Week in July 2025 and beyond
The City says the cleanups will be continued "indefinitely" and are "essential for ensuring longevity of this site".
The community will reportedly be notified before each cleanup date, and signage is posted at the cemetery.
"The City of Killeen is committed to maintaining a clean, respectable and serene resting place for loved ones," The City said in a release. "We ask for the community’s cooperation in keeping the cemetery orderly, beautiful and ensuring longevity. The City appreciates those helping to preserve the cemetery and keeping the appearance pleasant."
