'It's Ok to be Brave' | Killeen author spreading encouragement with book

Zada Jones-Collins wrote 'It's Ok to be Brave' and dedicated the book to her mother Angeline Jones and late father Willie Jones.

KILLEEN, Texas — From being a life coach to a notary public, Killeen author Zada Jones-Collins is a woman of many talents, but when it's time to tell her stories to the youth, she goes by 'Lady'.

"I go by Lady when I am reading stories and when I am providing service to children in need," Jones-Collins said.

For years, Jones-Collins has been visiting different schools all throughout Central Texas to encourage kids who may need a boost of confidence or are looking for someone to talk to. She also mentors parents to teach them about parenting and how to navigate through life.

"Parents need to know to listen to their kids and not just brush them off," Jones-Collins explained. "These kids need to know that they have someone to turn to when they need help."

To broaden her message, Jones-Collins decided to write a book named "It's Ok to be Brave" in 2019.

"'To be Brave' was based off what my parents gave me to give someone a break, a jumpstart, a reason to start over and a reason to be better," Jones-Collins added. "If it was not for my parents, I wouldn't be a better person today."

The book is filled with creative illustrations drawn by students from different schools Jones-Collins has visited across the community.

While the book is illustrative, there are also encouraging words that can apply not only to children but also to adults.

"It's Ok to be Brave even for the adults when you're ready to leave or want to leave a situation," Jones-Collins said. "But they have to do it in a certain format so that person who is victimized can be safe."

The book has made an impact on Jones-Collins and she believes it will do the same for others. She hopes people who read the book walk away knowing they'll always have something to turn to for help.

"The goal is to serve, and as we serve, the goal is to protect as well," said Jones-Collins.

Jones-Collins also has a 'Jump Start to Success' scholarship aimed at assisting lower-income families searching for education. She also plans to write another book this year and has community events planned to target helping the youth be brave and speak out.
