'You gotta have a green beer' | How Central Texans are celebrating St. Patrick's Day

From green beer to snacking on cabbage and sausage, Central Texans say the holiday is all about being together with friends and family.

WACO, Texas — If you take a look around Central Texas in March, you'll likely see green everywhere on the 17th!

That's because it's St. Patrick's Day, a global celebration of Irish culture that takes place annually on March 17.

It honors the patron saint who brought Christianity to Ireland.

Across the globe, people have their favorite traditions.

"I think you gotta have a green beer today," Central Texan, Mike Meadows, said. "Enjoy the food you know the corned beef and cabbage and some ours potatoes just sticking with the tradition of St. Patrick's."

"We love our dressing up and all the fun costumes out here," Jackie Fatten added.

"We love green and the fun of it and the get together and celebrating in the spring," Trish Griffin, Central Texas home owner, said. "It's great."

For Kelly, Realtors, a real estate agency in Waco, they help these traditions come alive by hosting their annual St. Patrick's Day party.

"It's a tradition for us," Fatten said. "I know it's a religious holiday as well. But it's a tradition for Kelly, Realtors too."

The celebration kicked off around noon where dozens of clients, friends and family gathered at Barnett's Whiskey House on Franklin Ave.

"This is our very favorite celebration," Griffin said. "The St. Patrick's Day celebration brings our community together."

People showed up and showed out in their green accessories and outfits. There was lots of green bear, Irish food and live music!

6 News asked about why this holiday is so special. For them, it's all about fellowship.

"To me it's just a reunion and being able to enjoy each other," Meadows said. "It's just you know, people we hadn't seen in a year since the party last year. You get to see clients and customers and friends and just celebrate today with them."
