BELTON, Texas — Chris Perez, the owner of Rusty Shells Seafood in Belton, has an extraordinary story of transformation, from serving time in federal prison to becoming a successful business owner and a source of inspiration in Central Texas.
"If you have a dream, don't listen to anybody around you that says negative stuff," Perez said. "If you have a vision, only you can see that vision. That's why it's your vision."
Perez's journey began with a vision and a dream to run his own business, despite being told he would never achieve success.
13 years ago I went to federal prison," Perez said. "I came home and took care of my mom for the last two or three years she was alive. She passed away I took off on the road, and I got tired of being on the road. I came up with an idea of building a food trailer."
It started out from scratch as Perez built the trailer in his driveway. He then launched his business Rusty Shells Seafood.
The food trailer quickly gained popularity, drawing long lines and wait times of up to three hours. People near and far traveled miles because the meals were just that tasty.
It's grown a lot," restaurant manager, Catherine Montez, said.
Encouraged by the overwhelming response, Perez decided to move his business into an actual building.
The transition involved extensive remodeling and expansion, a process Perez and his friends completed in about six weeks. The restaurant now has an extended menu and a larger team.
Reflecting on his journey, Perez remarked, "It doesn't feel real at all. If you haven't gotten down to try us, I pray that you do. Come check us out, and give me an honest review."
Rusty Shells Seafood, located at 1414 A E. 6th Ave in Belton, is open every day except Monday.
