'It's heartbreaking' | Headstones defaced in vandalism at Killeen Cemetery

People believe that one person has been defacing headstones, stealing items and removing solar lights from the cemetery.

KILLEEN, Texas — Visitors to the Killeen Cemetery believe one person has been defacing headstones, stealing items and removing solar lights for the past six months.

"Our cemetery crews have found graffiti in the cemetery and they do note the findings, and clean up what they can," said Communications and Marketing Officer Marcus Hood in a statement to 6 News.

6 News Reporter Sydney Dishon saw it all firsthand, many headstones are left with markings and others have visible damage.

Kana Skinner has lived in Killeen since 1961 and has family buried in the cemetery. She came to 6 News after seeing it all.

"It's heartbreaking," Skinner said. "This is a place where you can come and reflect and be with your family and not have to worry about things being stolen or missing or defaced. This is a sacred place and it should be kept sacred."

Skinner believes it's been happening for months.

"It's at all times, day and night," Skinner added. "It's been brought up to police and the city. It's falling on deaf ears."

Hood adds that they have no evidence of any specific person being responsible for the vandalism and urges citizens to report any suspicious activity to the Killeen Police Department at 254-501-8830.

In the meantime, families are left picking up the pieces and they won't stop fighting until something is done.

"It needs to stop," Skinner said.
