Harker Heights approves purchase of $1.29 million 'Digital Communications Recording System' for Police Department

The new system will reportedly include body cameras, in-car cameras, video redaction software and more.

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — The Harker Heights Police Department is planning to purchase a new "Digital Communications Recording System" they say will improve their safety and service to the community.

The Harker Heights city council reportedly approved the police department to purchase the new system at a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Harker Heights PD is now reportedly cleared to purchase the system from Axon Enterprises for a total of $1.291,556.72, which will be paid out over five years.

According to the City, Harker Heights PD has used a Digital Communications Recording System from Safe Fleet Coban Technologies since 2008, including things like body worn cameras, in-car cameras, digital storage software and more.

The department's contract with Safe Fleet Coban Technologies has reportedly ended, leading police staff to look for other options.

Police said Axon Enterprise, Inc. provided the "emerging technology" that will "improve officer safety, system capabilities and services to the community."

Through the proposed agreement with Axon Enterprise, Inc., Harker Heights will reportedly receive an "array" of products, services and capabilities like body cameras, in-car cameras, interview room cameras, video redaction software, community video recording intake and an evidence processing dashboard.

Harker Heights says the new services will provide "greater benefits and efficiency to agency personnel and community members", including providing officers with automatic video association to incidents, allowing supervisors to view live video feed while officers are on scene and allowing administrative staff to "complete video recording redactions and locate recordings associated to specific incidents for case and record preparation."

Community members will also reportedly be able to upload files related to reported incidents.
