Governor Abbott issues disaster declaration for Texas wildfires

The declaration, announced Sunday, Feb. 25, aims to ensure critical resources are swiftly deployed to communities impacted by the wildfires.

AUSTIN, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 60 Texas counties in response to widespread wildfire activity across the state, urging Texans to take precautions during dry and windy conditions.

The declaration, announced Sunday, Feb. 25, aims to ensure critical resources are swiftly deployed to communities impacted by the wildfires. Governor Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate additional state emergency response resources to support local firefighters tackling multiple blazes.

"The State of Texas stands ready to provide support to our local partners and deploy all resources needed to protect our fellow Texans and their property," said Governor Abbott. "Hot and dry conditions caused by high temperatures and windy conditions are expected to continue in the region in the coming days. These conditions could increase the potential for these wildfires to grow larger and more dangerous."

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, dry conditions and above-normal temperatures have heightened the risk of wildfires across the state, particularly in the Texas Panhandle.

Texans are urged to limit activities that could create sparks and take precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

Additional counties may be added to the disaster declaration if conditions call for it.
