TEMPLE, Texas — Cold weather is once again taking over Central Texas. This means more and more local shelters and non-profit organizations assist people experiencing homelessness and families in need.
As the local non-profit Feed My Sheep prepares for the arctic blast that will hit Central Texas, they realized what the community is in need of the most.
"We're pretty stocked up on coats and blankets, but still always taking those donations," Feed My Sheep Operations Director Casey Mooney explained. "What we are currently needing the most right now is food to help feed everyone during this time."
Feed My Sheep provides the meals for Impact Church as they serve as one of Temple's warming shelter when temperatures drop below 30 degrees.
The organization usually helps 40 to 60 people that are experiencing homelessness every day, year-round. However, with the weather getting colder and colder, Mooney said he wouldn't be surprised to see two times the amount of people utilizing the warming center.
"Some people who come to the warming center won't even be unhoused," Mooney added. "They can simply be people who live in the area who lost power or just coming from the neighborhood."
Mooney expects the warming center to be open every day next week because of the weather. If they do not have enough food every day, they will likely have to close their doors for at least a day to feed those in need the following day.
Here is a list of what Feed My Sheep is currently in need of:
- Ground Beef
- Sandwich Meat
- Non-perishables
- Pasta
- Canned goods
- Hot Chocolate
- Coffee
The organization also accepts monetary donations.
"Whatever you can do to help, take the time to do it," Mooney added. "Especially when it's getting this cold."
