COPPERAS COVE, Texas — Curbside Taco meals, appreciation banners, a yard sign, personalized school supplies handwritten notes, videos of appreciation and so much more. It's how administration, staff and students at Copperas Cove ISD honored their teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.
The gestures stirred up a lot of emotions for the teachers being honored -- even bringing some to tears.
"To know that you're appreciated by your administration, peers and staff and most of all our students because they are our hearts, it truly empowers us to do what we were already called to do and it just elevates us," Christina Newberry, Hettie Halstead’s 2020 Teacher of the Year, said.
The teachers said being away from their kiddos and the classroom because of the pandemic has been tough. They've worked hard to adapt through video conferencing, phone calls and finding creative ways to keep students engaged.
"The best part of this job is getting to interact with my students daily and currently that's kind of been taken from all of us and so especially this year it's been important to hear how much we are appreciated by our community," Caitlin McGath, a fifth grade teacher at Fairview/Miss Jewell Elementary, said.
Both teachers say they aren't in it for the recognition but say that a little, especially during times like this, definitely goes a long way.
"You never know what's going on in someone else's life. You don't have to know how far it went but your kindness could reach farther then you ever know," Newberry said.
