New census data shows Temple leads Central Texas towns in population growth

TEMPLE, Texas — The City of Temple has announced the postponement of the Bird Creek Battleground Site Dedication originally set for Tuesday, May 28.

The event, which aimed to highlight the history and significance of the Bird Creek Indian Battle, will be rescheduled at a later date, which has yet to be determined.

The dedication was set to celebrate the relocation of the Bird Creek Indian Battle 1936 Centennial Marker and the addition of a Texas Historical Subject Marker, both approved by the Texas Historical Commission.

The Bird Creek Indian Battle, a conflict between the Texas Rangers and a coalition of Caddo, Kickapoo, and Comanche Indians, occurred on May 26, 1839, in Temple. Recognizing the historical importance of this event, the State of Texas built the Bird Creek Indian Battle Marker in 1936.

The marker, previously situated near West Nugent Avenue west of I-35, was relocated by the City to a more accessible location near the Willow Glenn Subdivision, aiming to provide greater public access and understanding of the battle's significance.

Kelly Trietsch Atkinson, Assistant Director of Planning for the City of Temple, expressed the city's commitment to preserving the legacy of the Bird Creek Indian Battle through this relocation project.

"With the improvements we are making to this new site, we hope to create a more accessible and informative historical location that honors the legacy of the Bird Creek Indian Battle," Atkinson said.

Despite the postponement, the City invites the public to attend the rescheduled dedication event once a new date is determined. Free parking will be available along Merritt Road for attendees.
