MARLIN, Texas — Close to 100 residents flocked to the fire station in Marlin on Jan. 18, presenting their IDs to receive cases of water as the city remains under a boil notice, and pipes are just beginning to thaw after days of freezing temperatures.
Several residents said they're currently without water or dealing with merely a trickle as water pressure has not been restored since the freeze.
As of that afternoon, City utility crews were working on four utility pipe leaks and Mayor Susan Byrd said citizens need to continue to conserve.
"We have a lot of water here so we want to be able to do this over the next day or two, and if the weather changes we want to be able to do this again," Byrd said.
Resident Doris Piper anticipated issues with the pipes freezing up. Prior to the winter weather, she said she filled up empty laundry detergent bottles for "flush water" to fill up toilets.
"We just have old pipes, and it's a continuation of broken pipes from this weather," Piper said.
Piper said residents received a letter from Byrd that crews are working diligently to rectify the situation.
"The expansion and contraction of the pipes affects our water pressure, which affects our ability to get water to the houses," Byrd said.
Byrd said the city's water plant is up and functioning and now it's just a waiting game for pipes to thaw and for crews to respond to any leaks.
Marlin ISD said they are working closely with the City to address the issue for their students and staff and will "coordinate a response based on the most recent update" by Thursday night as to whether school will be in session on Friday.
