HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — The City of Harker Heights is offering residents some respite from the cold temperatures headed toward Central Texas.
"Severe cold weather" is forecasted for the area from Jan. 14-Jan. 17, according to the City, and the City plans to open warming centers to the community when conditions become dangerous.
The Central Fire Station, located at 401 Indian Trail in Harker Heights, will reportedly open as the first warming center for the city, with a secondary center at the Police Station Lobby, located at 402 Indian Trail.
According to the City, a warming center is a short-term emergency shelter that operates when temperatures or a combination of precipitation, wind chill, wind and temperature become "dangerously inclement".
Warming centers are designed for community members to get out of the elements, said the City, and offer seating in a warm, dry environment, as well as access to restrooms and water fountains.
The City of Harker Heights said if there is a need to upscale the shelters, the transition will be made to an Emergency Shelter, which also provides sleeping cots, blankets and hygiene kits.
