TEXAS, USA — 6 News has partnered up with Communities In Schools (CIS) of Greater Central Texas for their annual Shoes 4 Kids Drive, and they need your help! This is year 17 for the community to come together and take a small step toward making a big impact for local students.
The nonprofit says a new pair of shoes can make a world of difference in a child's life. It's not just about warmth and comfort; it's about dignity, self-esteem and the ability to fully participate in school and play.
Michael Dewees, Executive Director said, "They kind of turn inward on themselves and have a self image problem, and it's difficult and focusing on academics and school probably takes a backseat."
Unfortunately, for many families struggling to make ends meet, new shoes are a luxury some simply can't afford.
Communities in Schools of Greater Central Texas is taking action to address this critical need. The nonprofit organization is working tirelessly to boost students' self-esteem by providing them with new shoes. However, identifying students in need isn't always straightforward.
"A kid came into my office and had holes in his shoes," shared Tammie Leverett-Beard, a site coordinator. "A lot of times they don't want to tell you that they need shoes."
While it can be hard to ask for help, the nonprofit sees how big the impact is.
"The other day I had to give a student a pair of shoes," Leverett-Beard said. "They were just walking around like they were on top of the world!"
While the nonprofit collects shoes year-round, the demand peaks during the colder months.
"When the weather is cold, and a lot of times kids are displaced out of their homes, they lose a lot of clothing, shoes, and everything," explained Leverett-Beard.
Community Support and Donations
This year, the nonprofit partnered with 6 News, resulting in an overwhelming response from the community. In just one day, hundreds of shoes were donated, bringing their total to around 400 pairs total today.
If you want to contribute, you can donate brand new or gently used shoes. Donation drop-off locations are available in Temple, Killeen, and Salado until this Sunday. However, some sites may not be open over the weekend, so early donations are encouraged.
They also are taking monetary donations. For more information on how or where to donate, click here.
Recognition and Future Plans
In recognition of their impactful work, KCEN and the TEGNA Foundation awarded Communities in Schools of Greater Central Texas a $5,000 grant to support their mission. This generous contribution will help them continue serving families in need and making a difference in children's lives.
