'You can't even sleep at night' | Big Lots alarm disrupts Temple neighbors

An alarm at a Big Lots in Temple has been going off in the middle of the night multiple times a week for months, and people in the area have had enough.

TEMPLE, Texas — An alarm at a Big Lots in Temple has been going off multiple times a week for months, and people in the area have had enough.

Several people have raised concerns as they can hear the alarm from a mile away in their beds. They just want it to stop, and they want someone to be held responsible.

Eric Day has lived in Temple for 17 years and captured video of the blaring sound on Wednesday morning.

"There's a gentleman back here that said he can't even sleep at night because it's so loud," Day told 6 News.

Day hears the alarm when he goes to the dialysis center next door at 4 a.m.

"It's been going on for months now," Day said. "I'd probably say about four or five months. All night long, it's just going off."

It doesn't stop until the store opens.

"The whole time nobody shows up," Day explained. "No service vehicles or anything to even check on it."

The Temple Police Department False Alarm Reduction Program (FARP) says the Big Lots in Temple has their alarm registered with the FARP alarm program.

Each time their alarm goes off, and if it is a false alarm, Big Lots receives a fine.

FARP is currently in contact with Big Lots about their alarm system.

If you hear a security system alarm going off, please either call 911 or the non-emergency number at 254-298-5500.

When a security system alarm is triggered, if it is registered with FARP, an officer will automatically be dispatched to the address the system is registered to.

The police are dispatched to these alarm calls the same as when someone calls 911. The fine for false alarms depends on if it is a residence or a business, and how many times there has been a false alarm.

Big Lots has had 8 or more false alarms this year, which means it is a $100 fine each time the alarm goes off if it is a false alarm, according to the Temple Police Department.

It's still unclear what's causing it to go off, but people won't give up until they can get some peace and quiet.

"My end goal is to, you know, just speak on it and let, let other people know that, you know what's going on and hopefully that it does get resolved," Day said.
