Corps of Engineers closes Belton Lake Overlook permanently

The overlook along the Belton Dam was closed in 2022 due to alleged public safety concerns.

BELTON, Texas — The Belton Lake Overlook on the Belton Dam will be permanently closed, effective immediately, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Belton Lake Project Office.

The Belton Lake Overlook is located on FM 2271 on the northwestern side of the dam, said the Corps of Engineers. The area was reportedly designed to serve as a "flood risk management mission asset" where USACE staff could monitor and maintain the dam.

It was also used by visitors as a spot to enjoy views of the lake.

According to USACE, the overlook was closed in April 2022 due to public safety concerns over the accessibility of the area.

USACE said they coordinated with TxDOT to consider the best options for public safety and determined they would permanently close the area, with plans for TxDOT to install guardrail fencing.

For those who would still like to enjoy the views of the lake, Belton Lakeview Park is located on the southern side of the dam near the Belton Lake Project Office. USACE says it is a "safe, alternate site" to view the lake.

The parking area between Belton Lakeview Park is another area where visitors can enjoy views of the lake, said USACE.

Visitors are encouraged to contact the Belton Lake Office for more information on alternative access points, park hours and lake information, said USACE.
