City of Belton reaches staggering milestone in brush collection efforts

The City said if all the brush collected was gathered into a 12 ft. by 12 ft. box, it would be taller than the tallest building in the world.

BELTON, Texas — Many cities across Central Texas were battered by severe weather on May 22, 2024, with cities like Temple and Heidenheimer being hit by tornadoes, and many other areas seeing damaging winds, hail, flooding and more.

In the aftermath of the storms, cleanup has continued as community members and cities work to repair damage and clean up debris and brush.

The City of Belton is one of those communities, with crews having been collecting brush since shortly after the storm.

On Wednesday, June 19, the City announced it had reached a staggering milestone in its brush collection efforts, having passed the 15,000 cubic yard mark since the May 22 storm.

To put that number into perspective, the City said that if they were to stack the amount of brush they've collected into a 12 ft. X 12 ft. box, it would reach over 2,800 feet high, taller than the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands a little above 2,700 feet.

If the brush were loaded into pickup trucks parked bumper to bumper, the line of trucks would stretch from Belton to Killeen, said the City. It would reportedly take a brush collection truck 600 trips to haul that amount of brush.

According to the City of Belton, all of this collection was done by the City's current staff, and "a few hearty volunteers".

The City said they are still on the regular brush schedule, but are continuing to run extra collection crews as there is still a "large amount" of brush on the streets.

The City of Belton thanked residents for their patience during the cleanup process.
