BELL COUNTY, Texas — A Bell County inmate was indicted for assault of a public servant after a jailer was attacked while on duty.
According to arrest records, the jailer was moving inmates from one part of the jail to another when a fight broke out between Vernon Tyrell Walker, 40, and another inmate.
The jailer stepped in to break it up when Walker started to go after him, according to the arrest affidavit.
Video reportedly showed Walker attacking the jailer, pushing him into an open door where he hit his head. When the jailer fell to the ground, Walker struck him multiple times on the head and began to strangle him until he lost consciousness, arrest records said.
Inmates stepped in to help the jailer, who was taken to the hospital, according to the arrest affidavit.
Walker is currently being held on a charges of aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance.
According to arrest records, Walker was previously sentenced to two years for assault on a public servant in 2007.
