WACO -- Baylor University appears to be considering a renovation of the Ferrell Center.
An e-mail was sent to Baylor athletics season ticket holders from Ian McCaw, Vice President and Director of Athletics, asking for fans' opinions on features that will be considered in the possible renovation. The e-mail stated, "Please note that to date, Baylor Athletics has not made any decisions relative to the Ferrell Center project, including pricing, design and timeline. All potential seating concepts, pricing, amenities and images are purely conceptual and based on other new/renovated collegiate arena projects from across the country."
According to the e-mail, the university is working with Convention Sports & Leisure International, an advisory and planning firm based in Plano. The company assisted Baylor in conducting a "market and financial feasibility study to assess building a new campus football stadium along the north bank of the Brazos River near Interstate 35," according to their website. Based on the results of the study, the Baylor University Board of Regents approved the construction of what is now McLane Stadium.
The Ferrell Center was constructed in 1988 and is home to a variety of events. A new hardwood floor was installed in the Ferrell Center before the 2014-15 season and a new video scoreboard was installed in 2010. The Ferrell Center currently has a seating capacity of 10,284 for basketball games and 12,000 for conventions, concerts, graduation exercises and convocations, according to the Baylor Facilities website.
