The Federal Economic Development Administration has awarded the City of Belton and the Belton Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) a $2 million grant to fund a utility project at the former Rockwool Superfund site.

The grant will go towards the extension of water and sewage to the site, which is located on FM 93, a quarter-mile east of I-35 as stated by the release.

The city says the grant requires a $500,000 local match to be funded by the BEDC, which has been marketing the property for several years. It is estimated that this expansion will help with the creation of 25 jobs, according to the BEDC.

The Rockwool property used to be a Federal Superfund site in 1988, according to the city. A $17 million State and Federal project was undertaken to restore contaminated areas at the location which was impacted by a manufacturing process for mineral wool insulation, as stated in a release.
