TEMPLE, Texas — As summer wraps up, you might be left with a vacation bill and expensive electric bills as the air conditioners just keep running. After all, we've officially got over a month of summer left and the kids are back in school! We'll discuss how to ease that burden in tonight’s Money Talks.
More than 50 million American schoolchildren are going back to school this fall. That's an incredible number. And many looked for activities to do in the summer, and the school that you attend is a great place to start!
"I know that there is a lot of schools right now doing the sports camps and the different activities, but keeping the kids off the game," said certified financial planner Rolandus Johnson, "And that goes into other financial areas like bringing up the electricity bill and since they are home all of the time, so there are things that your budget might not be prepared for going into summer time that is a little bit different than going into school when they are gone for eight hours a day."
And with temperatures in the triple digits all summer even as school starts, Johnson says get outdoors when you can and take advantage of free activities, rather than just staying indoors and running up that electric bill.
"I know with our kids personally, with them being in multiple sports, and we get out of the house for two or three hours per day and just go run around and work out, whether it's to toss the ball around or run a few laps, but keeping the kids involved is just good you know, the more that they are out of the house the better off they are going to be when they grow up and then it kind of saves a little stress on that electric bill, and this is probably one of the hottest summers in my short time on this earth! So keeping them out and keeping them busy, keeping them active and it's going to pay huge dividends and then it will save on your pocket right now."
And a reminder that as the weather cools in the morning and evenings more and more kids will be outdoors so be on the lookout when you are out driving around. Safety first for all of our loved ones!
