Energy companies urge customers to conserve

Central Texans are once again being asked to conserve energy as heat reaches triple digits again.

CENTRAL, Texas — The key to saving the power grid as Central Texas reaches triple digits again, is to conserve as much energy at home.

ERCOT has already issued another Weather Watch until Friday. Now energy companies are urging users to conserve as well.

Companies like Green Mountain Energy Company and Reliant have sent emails to their customers asking to conserve energy starting Monday, from two to eight p.m.

There are ways to conserve energy to save money and the Texas grid.

"Every degree you raise your thermostat, you'll save about three percent on your cooling costs," Paul Hope, Sr. Home and Garden Editor, said.

Instead of paying $300 or $400 to cool your home in the summer, you'll be saving $120 a month just for the one simple change, Hope added.

Raising your thermostat is not the only way to save.

Experts recommend washing clothes in the morning or at night, while the sun isn't blazing.

Keeping your windows and blinds closed is important too, as well as avoiding the use of large appliances, unplugging non-essential items and turning off equipment that's not in use.

"Demand is going up because more people are moving to Texas," Shawn Kelley, with TAMUCT, said.

As of early Monday morning, the Texas power grid seems to be well on its way to staying pretty stable, but demand for energy is expected to go up. As for ONCOR, the company has only documented about 30 outages as of Monday morning.

Six News will continue to keep an eye on the grid and provide you live updates on air and online as the week progresses.
