TEMPLE, Texas — In this week’s Your Best Life, KCEN evening anchor Leslie Draffin chatted with health coach and fitness trainer Susan Cornette about healthy fats and why we need them in our diet.
Cornette is experienced in the fitness field. She first started studying nutrition in the '80s. She preaches that the keys to living a healthy life are exercising and eating right, but diet accounts for 80% of that formula.
Cornette said of the several different kinds of fats, we need polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats for a heathy diet.
These are things like olives, olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado. According to Cornette, saturated fats are also common in our diets, in things like cheese, meat and dairy. While those aren’t great sources of healthy fats, they’re okay, as long as you limit how much you’re eating.
However, the truly “bad” fats are trans fats: Think any processed foods! Cornette said we should avoid eating trans fats as much as possible, but a splurge every now and then won’t completely derail your healthy lifestyle.
