TEMPLE, Texas — Everyday, the nonprofit animal rescue, Pearl's Place, diligently aids pets in need. Founder Lisa Kathan emphasizes the difficulty of turning away animals due to limited resources as she states, "It's hard to say no."
The organization currently cares for a little more than 50 dogs. Kathan acknowledges the ideal number should be in the thirties, but they have reached as high as the mid sixties.
"We don't have the room or the funding," Kathan said.
She reflects on her lifelong dedication to animal rescue as she stated, "Most of my life I saved animals."
Kathan says the inception of Pearl's Place was inspired by Pearl, a dog at risk of euthanasia. "She was extremely overweight and 12 years old and we decided to take her home and we named the rescue Pearl's Place."
Despite the challenges, Pearl's Place has made significant strides since its establishment in 2017, rescuing hundreds of dogs, including approximately 150 last year alone.
"We take in a lot of orthopedic cases; broken legs, gunshot wounds, skin issues," Kathan said. The nonprofit extends its reach to dogs from shelters facing euthanasia.
Kathan acknowledges the difficulties faced by their small team, but remains committed to their mission, noting that "It's just one step at a time."
